A sweepstakes or contest gives your audience a reason to engage before, during, and after a product launch: joining an email list of interested buyers, talking about the product, and sharing how they use it.

This guide covers a three-phase contest strategy for product launches: pre-launch collection, launch day activation, and post-launch amplification.

Phase 1: Pre-Launch Email Collection

Many brands start about 4–6 weeks before launch, after any required state filings (see the timeline below). The goal is to build an email list of people interested in your product before it's available. A sweepstakes is the incentive to sign up.

Pre-Launch Sweepstakes Structure

1

Create a landing page with product teaser

Show enough to generate interest — the problem you're solving, a product render or mockup, and a launch date. Don't reveal everything.

2

Offer a launch-aligned prize

"Win one of the first [products] before anyone else" or "Win a year's supply of [product]." The prize should be the product itself — this qualifies your email list.

3

Add referral bonus entries

Give each entrant a unique referral link. The referrer earns bonus entries when a friend enters through it, which can extend the reach of your pre-launch list.

4

Drip teaser content to the list

Send 2–3 pre-launch emails with behind-the-scenes content, feature previews, or founder stories to entrants who agreed to marketing email. Disclose the sign-up on the entry form and include an unsubscribe link.

Qualify your list with the prize

If your prize is your own product, entrants are more likely to be potential customers. A generic gift card attracts people who want gift cards, not your product. For pre-launch campaigns, use your product or a closely related bundle as the prize.

Phase 2: Launch Day Activation

Launch day is your highest-attention moment. Use a promotion to convert that attention into sales, social sharing, and user-generated content.

Launch Day Sweepstakes

Run a short sweepstakes starting on launch day. Everyone who purchases the product within the launch window is entered to win a grand prize, such as a year's supply, a premium version, or a bundle with complementary products. Revup's Shopify purchase sweepstakes include a free entry form and reverse entries on refunds and cancellations. See how to run a purchase sweepstakes.

Purchase-linked entries require AMOE

If entry is earned through purchase, you must provide a free alternative method of entry (AMOE) with equal odds per entry, in the same drawing, for the same prizes. A web form or mail-in entry works. Free entrants can never be capped below buyers, and you shouldn't raise the launch price because of the promotion. Disclose the free method prominently on the purchase page and in all promotional materials.

Launch Day Instant Win

Layer an instant win game on top of your launch. Purchasers and free entrants play with the same odds to reveal whether they've won a secondary prize, such as a discount on their next order, a free accessory, or exclusive content.

Unboxing Contest

Ask early buyers to submit an unboxing photo or video, judged against criteria stated in your official rules. This generates product content from real customers in the first days after launch. Include a content license and publicity terms in the rules, and if the winner is picked at random instead of judged, offer a free way to enter.

Revup Revup

Revup helps you configure entry forms, eligibility settings, and official-rules templates. Review the rules and handle registration and compliance obligations for your campaign.

Phase 3: Post-Launch Amplification

Attention usually peaks in the first few days. Use contests and promotions over the following weeks to sustain momentum.

Feedback Survey Sweepstakes

Invite early buyers to complete a short private feedback survey for a chance to win. You learn what customers think of the product without trading entries for public reviews.

Feedback Survey Best Practices

  • Entry for completing the survey, whatever the answers
  • Keep responses private; don't publish them as testimonials without permission and disclosure
  • Free entry for non-purchasers (for example, a web form)
  • Prize is relevant to your product, not a generic gift card

Don't award entries for product reviews

The FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule (16 CFR Part 465) bars incentives conditioned on a review's sentiment, the FTC Endorsement Guides require incentivized reviews to be disclosed, and many review platforms ban incentivized reviews altogether. Ask for reviews separately, with no sweepstakes entry attached.

Referral Contest

After launch, give early buyers and other entrants a unique referral link. The referrer earns bonus entries when a friend enters through it, and a random drawing picks the winner. See our full guide to referral sweepstakes programs.

User-Generated Content Campaign

Ask customers to submit how they're using the product: photos, videos, creative uses. Judges pick the best submissions, and if your official rules grant a license, submissions can become a library of customer content. Entrants who post publicly about the contest should use #contest or #sweepstakes. See UGC contest strategy.

Product Launch Campaign Timeline

If total prizes in a sweepstakes are more than $5,000, New York requires registration 30 days before the start date and Florida 7 days before, so filing has to happen well before the pre-launch campaign opens. See registration and bonding requirements and the sweepstakes law map.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far before launch should I start the pre-launch sweepstakes?

Many brands run pre-launch campaigns for about 4–6 weeks. Too short, and there's little time to build a list; too long, and teaser content can run thin. Start when you have enough product visuals to share, and after any New York or Florida filing deadlines.

Should the prize be my product or something else?

Usually your product, or a bundle that includes it. Generic prizes such as gift cards or electronics attract entrants who may have no interest in your product. If your product's retail value is low, bundle it with complementary items.

Can I run a pre-launch sweepstakes before the product exists?

Yes. You can offer the product as a prize before it's available, as long as your official rules state that the prize will be delivered after launch. Include the approximate retail value, an estimated delivery date, and a substitution clause in case the launch is delayed.

Can I give sweepstakes entries for product reviews?

Don't. The FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule bars incentives tied to a review's sentiment, incentivized reviews must be disclosed, and many review platforms ban them. Ask for reviews separately, and use a private feedback survey if you want to attach a chance to win.
